Imagine, for a moment, pulling down a heavy, cobwebbed music box from a high shelf in a dim corner of an antique barn. In the book that accompanies “Washington Phillips and His Manzarene Dreams,” a newly remastered boxed set that will arrive later this fall, the writer Michael Corcoran calls Phillips’s sound “highly developed to the point of being almost psychedelic.” Its prettiness is disorienting, hypnotic. They simply do not seem born of this earth. Since at least 1991, when Yazoo Records issued “I Am Born to Preach the Gospel,” the first digital compilation of Phillips’s work, listeners have been trying to suss out exactly what Phillips was doing in the makeshift Dallas studio where these songs were recorded. But Washington Phillips-a stocky, snuff-dipping gospel singer from East Texas, who recorded eighteen songs for Columbia Records between 19-is an uncommonly captivating cipher. There aren’t many artists for whom the come-on “New Research!” would yield much fuss.

We provide a revised delimitation of species in the Largemouth Bass complex that necessitates a change in scientific nomenclature: Micropterus salmoides is retained for the Florida Bass and Micropterus nigricans is elevated from synonymy for the Largemouth Bass. Our phylogenomic analyses of ddRAD data result in the delimitation of 19 species of Micropterus, which includes 14 described species, the undescribed but well-known Altamaha, Bartram’s, and Choctaw basses, and two additional undescribed species currently classified as Smallmouth Bass ( M. Despite their popularity, previous studies to delimit species and lineages in Micropterus suffer from insufficient geographic coverage and uninformative molecular markers. The Black Basses ( Micropterus) are an iconic lineage of freshwater fishes that include some of the world’s most popular species for recreational fishing and world's most invasive species. Because the taxonomic rank of species is important in conservation and management strategies, success of these efforts depends on accurate species delimitation. Informed management and conservation efforts are vital to sustainable recreational fishing and biodiversity conservation. Recently we’ve gotten the “Orphan” sequel (although those familiar with that franchise know why Esther doesn’t quite fit this mold). Children who haven’t yet learned morality (and perhaps aren’t capable of learning it) are among the most unsettling horror and murder-mystery villains, in my opinion. More to the point, Josephine is a sociopath. Josephine is precocious, so that makes the writing easier. She does a masterful job with Josephine, described as being 11 or 12 by narrator Charles, an informal assistant to Inspector Taverner. And the origins of the French Revolution are traced back to a stock market bubble caused by a convicted Scot murderer. With the clarity and verve for which he is known, Ferguson elucidates key financial institutions and concepts by showing where they came from. The rise of the Dutch republic is reinterpreted as the triumph of the world's first modern bond market over insolvent Habsburg absolutism. Suddenly, the civilization of the Renaissance looks very different: a boom in the market for art and architecture made possible when Italian bankers adopted Arabic mathematics. What's more, he reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history.Through Ferguson's expert lens familiar historical landmarks appear in a new and sharper financial focus. But in The Ascent of Money, Niall Ferguson shows that finance is in fact the foundation of human progress. To revolutionaries, it's the chains of labor. To Christians, love of it is the root of all evil. Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of finance, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance.Bread, cash, dosh, dough, loot, lucre, moolah, readies, the wherewithal: Call it what you like, it matters. Here in this play, Lavinia Edward’s Wife makes a sacrifice for her husband. The play is based on the Alcestis Legend by Euripides (in Greek mythology Alcestis sacrificed herself to save her husband). the conflict that arises after marriage.Instead, it has profound aspects and themes which make it quite odd. The play according to Eliot is a comedy but has very less comic elements. But he says plenty about each topic, and I think a lot of it flew right over my head the first time I read it. It's not an incredibly lengthy book, 227 pages in my edition. The chapters are short, only 5-7 pages really. After reading Tim Keller's The Meaning of Marriage (which quotes Lewis all throughout), I knew I wanted to mark Mere Christianity off of my list. Lewis, and it always makes me feel a little more intelligent when I actually understand what I'm reading. I have gone through the Chronicles of Narnia, The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce, The Space Trilogy, and now Mere Christianity, which is surprisingly only a small fraction of all of the books he has actually written, but I always feel like I'm doing something worthwhile when I read a book by C.S. If you've never read any of Lewis' nonfiction works, they are a little more challenging and mentally exhausting than his fiction writings. This past summer I picked up the book Mere Christianity by C.S. The Law of Human Nature (and) Some Objectionsīook Four: Beyond Personality or First Steps in the Doctrine of the Trinity īook One: Right and Wrong as a Clue to the Meaning of the Universeġ. I have updated this section with all the links, so this post provides not only an introduction and background/context for the book (see section below this outline), but it is also a landing page for all of the content of the 31-day series. Here is the layout of the entire 31 days and what each day's post covered. What we are left with amounts to a series of images with a spoken word soundtrack. Even the sex scene is handled with a delicate, dry touch. This movie takes perhaps too reverent a tone with the book. By the end, his subtle gestures are a tad too subtle. Bosco Hogan, as Stephen, gives a stone face and precious little energy to the interior monologue. The sensual novel, however, is made stiff and sometimes rather bland in deference to its philosophy. Standouts include Stephen's father and a rousing interpretation of the famous description of Hell from John Gielgud. In effect, this movie is the book come to life - as exactly as 90 minutes of film will allow. The well-chosen cast struggles and mostly succeeds with the dialogue, largely taken directly from Joyce's words. A delicate, brooding adaptation of Joyce's slim novel. |
